Air Filtech Deploys Odor Control Solution for a PE/PP Plastic Recycling Plant in Dong Nai
A PE/PP plastic recycling plant in Dong Nai Province has successfully implemented Air Filtech’s odor control solution, putting an end to three years of environmental administrative penalties and winning back the trust of the surrounding community.
The Challenge
The plant processes 120 tons of recycled plastic per day, generating significant emissions during grinding, melting, and pelletizing. The main sources of pollution include VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) — mainly xylene and styrene released during plastic heating and recycling — the characteristic odor of processed mixed plastics, and plastic dust and material fragments from the grinding stage, which can reduce the effectiveness of the downstream odor treatment system if left unfiltered.
The plant’s previous water scrubber system proved ineffective, since most of the organic compounds generated are not water-soluble, severely limiting its ability to remove odor and VOCs.
Air Filtech’s Solution
Air Filtech implemented a two-stage treatment system combining dust filtration and chemical adsorption.
Stage 1 — Dust filtration: a Pulse-Jet bag filter system captures plastic dust and material fragments from the grinding machines before the air reaches the odor control system, protecting the carbon adsorption media downstream and extending its service life by preventing early clogging.
Stage 2 — Odor and VOC treatment: a Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) module combined with KMnO₄ chemisorption media removes VOCs and odor-causing compounds in the final stage.
System specifications: total carbon media volume of 3.2 tons, treating an airflow of 45,000 m³/hour.
Results After Implementation
Total VOC concentration at the stack now measures 12 mg/m³, well below the 50 mg/m³ limit set by QCVN 20. Odor concentration, measured using the Olfactometry method, has dropped by 94%. The provincial environmental authority has confirmed the plant now complies with QCVN 20:2009/BTNMT, and no complaints from surrounding residents have been recorded in the following 12 months.
