Hinkley Point C is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant project, located in Somerset, United Kingdom. The plant has a designed capacity of 3.2 GW, enough to supply electricity to approximately 6 million households. The project is being developed by EDF Energy, with a total investment of approximately £26 billion.

Challenge

A nuclear power plant requires an air filtration system built to the highest safety standards to ensure absolute control of radioactive particles throughout operation.

The filtration system had to:

  • Prevent radioactive particles from entering critical areas of the reactor.
  • Prevent the release of radioactive substances into the environment.
  • Meet strict nuclear safety standards and seismic resistance requirements.
  • Ensure reliability and service life throughout the plant’s entire design lifecycle.

Camfil’s Solution

Camfil supplied a dedicated multi-stage air filtration system for the entire Hinkley Point C project, including:

  • G4 and F7 pre-filters for the general ventilation system.
  • HEPA H14 and ULPA U15 filters for radiation-controlled areas.
  • A molecular filtration system using activated carbon to treat iodine gas and radioactive noble gases.
  • Filtration equipment compliant with international standards for the nuclear power industry.
