In automotive paint booths, particles as large as 10–50 microns can cause visible surface defects, driving up rework costs, affecting paint quality, and posing risks to worker health and the surrounding environment.
1. Three Painting Stages and Their Filter Requirements
Stage 1 — Primer
- Pre-filters remove coarse dust and insects
- Ceiling supply air: F6/F7 (ePM2.5 ≥ 50%)
- Exhaust pre-filter: G4, for large overspray particles
Stage 2 — Topcoat and Clearcoat
- Requires ≥99% removal efficiency for particles ≥5 microns
- Ceiling supply: F8/F9 (ePM1 ≥ 70–90%) Mini-Pleat or Rigid Filter
- Floor filters capture overspray and protect the water treatment system and sump
- Downdraft airflow of 0.2–0.5 m/s maintained at the vehicle surface
Stage 3 — Oven (Curing)
- Heat-resistant primary filters installed at the fresh-air intake
- Composite or fiberglass media rated for temperatures up to approximately 200°C
2. Standard Downdraft Paint Booth Filter Structure
- Stage 1: Plenum intake — G4 coarse filter
- Stage 2: AHU — Pocket Filter F7/F8
- Stage 3: Ceiling supply — Rigid or Mini-Pleat Filter F8/F9
- Stage 4: Floor exhaust — fiberglass overspray arrestor or polyester floor filter
3. VOC Control and Fire Safety
Solvents such as xylene, toluene, and MEK pose a Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) combustion risk. Key safety measures include:
- Minimum 4 air changes per hour (ACH) in the paint booth, and 6 ACH in the oven
- Anti-static / ESD-safe filter media
- VOC sensors for automatic system shutoff
